Tough times are back in the business world, and with them the job cuts. The past few months have seen several global giants, including IT companies, shed jobs. While in some cases the reason behind these job cuts is business restructuring, in others it is the need to become more cost efficient. Here are some of the biggest IT companies which have announced job cuts in 2012.

1) HP – 27,000
In May, Hewlett Packard (HP) announced it will lay-off 27,000 employees across the globe. This included 9,000 job cuts in the USA, while CEO Meg Whitman assured that this move will not affect employees in India.

2) Nokia – 14,000
In February, Nokia stated that it planned to fire 2,300, 1,000 and 700 jobs in Hungary, Finland and Mexico, respectively, as it shifted all manufacturing operations to Asia. Then in June, Nokia declared plans to let go of 10,000 of its employees by the end of 2013 as part of the cost cutting initiative.

3) Sony - 10,000
Sony in April said it will shed 10,000 employees as part of its 'One Sony' initiative. This means that the company will lose 6% of its global staff in a bid to once again become profitable.

The vast amount of civil infrastructure in the United States includes an extensive stretch of road networks. From an economic point of view it is more cost effective to maintain the already existing pavements rather than building new ones. A large proportion of the traffic delays on these road networks are caused by road closures and closures of individual lanes for pavement maintenance purposes.

This work presents the development of a parameterized automated generic model for the structural design of an aircraft wing. Furthermore, in order to perform finite element analysis on the aircraft wing geometry, the process of finite element mesh generation is automated.

The problem that has been addressed in the following thesis is the lack of data concerning customer perceptions and expectations of services provided to them by companies in the floral industry. We have through this study attempted to offer an insight into the Swedish floral industry and hope that this research will provide for the required data to better understand the expectations of flower shoppers.

It is therefore important to be aware of the security risks that exist when using a mobile device in order to stay protected.

Govt of India bans bulk SMS & MMS for 15 days on Friday

Govt of India announced that sending bulk sms & mms ( now you can use only 5sms/day ) will be banned for 15 days due to the rumors spreading in the north eastern states that the people will be attacked if returned from major cities in which many of them took shelter all these days like Hyderabad, Bangalore and other states and the police will be monitoring all calls and sms and catch hold of the persons spreading rumors.

Rumors have been spread that the people from the northeast states would be attacked after Ramzan to take revenge of the recent violence in Assam which took 74 lives with it. The rumors have caused over 5,000 students from northeast fleeing to Guwahati from Bangalore by special trains till late Wednesday.The Govt of India states that the situation is under control and forces have been deployed in various states that concerns the matter.

The task in this project is to design a generator for a vertical axis wind turbine with power rated to 20kW at a wind speed of 10m/s. The design has just a few moving parts, which decreases maintenance costs and increases its toughness. The turbine absorbs wind from every direction but its rotation speed ratio is lower than horizontal axis wind turbines.

A carbon dioxide emission calculator for buildings created by the U.S.-based company CTG Energetics, Inc. and based on a Excel file has been converted to a ASP.NET / SQL Server web application. Carbon dioxide emissions are calculated using data given by the user (i.e. floor area, workdays per year) in combination with statistical data used in user-selectable presets (i.e. building type, climate zone, type of water-using fixtures).

This project aims to simulate and find out more about the electrical dynamics of a six-phase exciter for hydropower generators. Because ordinary electric circuit-based simulation software only simulate three-phase electrical systems, a FEM-based software is used for the electrical dynamics simulations of the six-phase system.

KINEMATICS OF MACHINERY

Tiny Timber is a very lightweight, real-time kernel for small, event-driven embedded systems. It implements reactive objects as a way of structuring embedded software. These objects are components that react to incoming events by updating their internal state and issuing an outgoing event.

Despite the introduction of DNA-analysis for identification of human remains (1997-2000) several cases exist where the deceased remain unidentified. Approximately ten percent of unknown deceased persons can not be identified by dental status or other present methods. During the year 2003 alone, seven individuals, in Sweden, remain unidentified.

The HPEP (High Performance Electric Propulsion) thruster is expected to be the outcome of an innovative project initiated by the Swedish Space Corporation. It combines the concept of a 10 kW electrodeless plasma thruster designed by the Elwing Company and the ADN based monopropellant LMP-103S developed by ECAPS and used in the HPGP thrusters of the Prisma Satellites.

The main purpose of this study was to assess the role of work motivation on employee performance. This study in an assessment of this purpose used deductive approach in which a qualitative survey was carried out among students at of Umeå Business School (USBE) who are assumed to be future employees .

Bridge design and construction practice in former USSR, especially Russia, is not much known to the foreign engineers. The aim of this project is to assess the load carrying capacity of the Glomman Bridge outside of the Swedish city Örebro. The Glomman Bridge is an unreinforced concrete single span arch bridge with backfill. The bridge was constructed in 1923 on assignment from the Swedish National Railways (SJ).

A UAV is an aircraft that contains sensors, GPS, radio system, servomechanisms and computers, which provide the capability of an autonomous flight without a human pilot in the cockpit.
